A lack of plate discipline has been one of the byproducts of that youth for Pittsburgh this year, as the Pirates have the third-highest strikeout total in the National League. However, the squad showed some veteran resolve on Tuesday against Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Though Dickey fanned 10 Pirates batters, Pittsburgh got to the left-hander for a three-run eighth inning and ultimately won after trailing for the majority of the night.
If the youthful Pirates are going to remain in striking distance in the NL Central, they must continue to carry a similar resolve into Wednesday's third game of a four-game set against the Mets at Citi Field.
"There's still some youthful inexperience on this club on the offensive side, two years and less, and that's part of the learning curve," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "For us to get offensive traction, if we can reduce the number of strikeouts, it's going to play to our advantage, no doubt."
Chris Capuano will get the starting nod for the Mets, hoping to induce plenty of strikeouts against the Bucs. Capuano's most recent outing -- in which he allowed just one earned run on four hits in six innings against Philadelphia last Friday -- was deserving of a win, but he was left with a no-decision after closer Francisco Rodriguez blew a save and the Mets lost, 6-4.
The left-hander had only thrown 78 pitches before getting the hook from Terry Collins, but was understanding of his skipper's decision.
"I understand at that point in the game, runs are kind of at a premium," Capuano said. "We're trying to score some runs there. It was a short conversation. I obviously still felt good, hadn't thrown many pitches, but he's managing to win the game right there."
Going for what would be his Major League-leading eighth win for the Pirates is Kevin Correia. Correia, who became the league's first seven-game winner last Friday, owns 3.44 ERA, and has also seemingly enjoyed starting on the road this season. He's 6-1 away from home.
