"Things are changing all the time, so you play the game and the series that you're involved in," La Russa said.
On Wednesday, the Cardinals -- however they're arranged in the field -- will have their work cut out for them when they face San Francisco right-hander Tim Lincecum in the third game of a four-game series at Busch Stadium.
Lincecum comes to St. Louis on a two-game winning streak and amidst a stretch in which he has allowed zero runs in three of his last five outings. Two starts ago, he twirled a shutout and followed that with a solid outing Friday against Milwaukee, holding the Brewers to three runs on six hits in seven innings.
The 26-year-old right-hander has been successful against the Cardinals in his career, going 5-1 with a 2.23 ERA in six starts. In four starts at Busch Stadium, Lincecum is 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA.
Opposing Lincecum is right-hander Jake Westbrook, who has recorded a win in each of his last three starts. In his last outing, Friday against Colorado, Westbrook held the Rockies to three runs on five hits in five innings.
St. Louis will need Westbrook to go deeper than five innings Wednesday, as its bullpen has worked 16 innings over the last four days. Despite its recent workload, La Russa said he always manages his bullpen with an eye toward the future.
"We're not deep enough to pitch a lot of innings without thinking about tomorrow," La Russa said.
Giants: Huff searching
Aubrey Huff watched most of Tuesday's game from the bench as the first baseman took a mental break from his struggles this season. Huff, who pinch-hit in the sixth, has only a .218 batting average, compared to the .290 he posted last season.
Huff said he's been swinging at bad pitches, while manager Bruce Bochy suggested Huff was trying to do too much with Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval sidelined with injuries. The main thing, along with swinging at bad pitches, is that he's thinking too much, Huff said.
"When you're hot, you don't think about anything up there. You just see the ball and think about hitting every pitch as hard as you can," Huff said. "Right now, for me, it feels like, 'Put my foot down. Where are my hands? What pitch is coming?' Just too much going on up there."
Huff could be back in the lineup Wednesday vs. Westbrook, against whom he is hitting .375 (9-for-24) in his career.
